Ali Ahmad Kurd takes lead as vote count continues

ISLAMABAD: Candidate for the seat of the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Ali Ahmad Kurd on Tuesday secured 144 votes while his opponent M. Zafar got 69 votes. According to unofficial result announced here, total registered votes were 230 out of which 217 were polled in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

According to unofficial results announced at Lahore, Peshawar and Islamabad, Kurd was taking lead by securing 703 votes. M. Zafar has so far been able to obtain 323 votes.

Voting process to elect new office bearers of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) continued at four provincial capitals, besides Islamabad, Multan, Bahawalpur and Abbotabad. A total of 1,721 registered members of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) were to elect new office bearers of the lawyers’ body.

As many as 825 members cast their votes in Lahore, 289 in Sindh, 230 in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, 46 in Bahawalpur, 73 in Multan, 160 in NWFP and 183 in Balochistan.

For the office of president, two candidates including Ali Ahmad Kurd and M Zafar are in the run, while for four vice president offices, eight candidates are in the field.

Similarly, for the seats of secretary and additional secretary a total of five candidates are contesting. Sixteen members of Executive Body would also be elected.

It was the eleventh election of SCBA. The first was held in 1993. A. Karim Malik was elected as the first president of SCBA whereas Aitzaz Ahsan, elected in 2007, is the outgoing president.
