Following a record 205 millimeters of heavy downpours for hours,
Karachi, the meg-metropolis city was struck by an onrushing deluge that
sent several thoroughfares and residential areas submerged, while 25
persons died in incidents of electrocution and other mishaps and a
large chunk of the city is still deprived of electricity.
Met.
Department said that the showers last night continued lashing the city
for over three hours non-stop, while Masroor Area received the rains
most measuring 205mm (8 inches) followed by University Road and airport
areas recording 143mm of downpours.
Following last night lashing
heavy downpours, scores of residential areas including Bath Island,
Defence, Jahangir Road and many other low-lying areas went under
several-feet deep water, flowing into the houses made the residents’
life miserable. KPT and Liaquatabad underpasses were also flooded.
Several busy roads of the city including I.I. Chundrigar Road, M.A.
Jinnah Road and Aiwan-e-Saddar stand still flooded with water, where
parked vehicles are seen floating until this morning.
Major
power breakdown in the city further exacerbated the situation, as
hundreds of KESC feeders had tripped with the first drop of rain.
However, the restoration of power supply in phases has started since
Sunday morning, while most of the city including Baldia, old
sabzimandi, Model Colony, Federal B Area, Landhi, Jacobline, Garden,
Jublee are without electricity since Friday morning until this time.
KESC spokesman said that 150MW of electricity supply has be restored.
Rain-related
death toll in the city has shot up to 25 mostly due to electrocution
and other mishaps of roofs and walls of the houses caving in.
Mobile phone companies’ services were also badly hit by the monsoon deluge, which had severed all communications in the city.
On
the other hand, potable water supply has also stopped for want of
electricity at the pumping stations, while water scarcity kept piling
miseries to the people.
Karachi Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal
undaunted by the heavy downpours kept taking rounds of the city and
personally supervised the emergency works and other relief measures.
Talking
to Geo News on this occasion, Syed Mustafa Kamal told that the record
rain for hours all through the night have created problems, which could
not be surmounted instantly.
Met. Department Chief
Metrologist, Muhammad Riaz said that the intensity of heavy rains has
weakened, but for the next 24 hours sky would remain overcast with
persistent light rains in the city

This is a slap on the face of the Karachi nazim, who seems to be working hard to project his image, and CDGK. I would just wish he works more harder on the problems Karachi thon his own image but, alas, barking dogs seldom bite
ina lilaha va ina alehe rajon.
