ISLAMABAD: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif is not likely to contest the forthcoming by-elections in Punjab and party officials are reluctant to say anything about the reason for his reluctance to take part in the polls.

Private TV channels reported on Sunday about an alleged arrangement between Mr Sharif and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia under which the PML-N chief has been asked by the king not to contest elections till next year.

Pakistan Muslim League-N has sought postponement of the by-elections through an application submitted to the Lahore High Court on security grounds and its leaders are still not clear what would be the decision of Mr Nawaz Sharif if the court asked the Election Commission to go ahead with the polls.

‘We will abide by the court order, but a final decision about whether or not Mr Nawaz Sharif will contest the polls will be the sole prerogative of Mr Sharif himself,’ PML-N chief spokesman Sidiqul Farooq said.Media reports said that under a controversial accord between Mr Sharif and former President Pervez Musharraf in 1999, the PML-N chief did not take part in general elections because he had been asked by King Abdullah to abide by the deal.

A PML-N leader, however, rejected reports of Mr Nawaz Sharif not contesting the by-elections.

‘Media reports about any restriction on Mr Nawaz Sharif from contesting polls till 2010 are baseless and part of a disinformation campaign against Mr Sharif and his party,’ PML-N spokesman Ahsan Iqbal said.

He claimed that Saudi king had not asked Mr Sharif to stay away from elections till 2010 and said that taking part in the polls was a constitutional right of the PML-N chief.

‘There was no agreement between Mr Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf and it was only an understanding between Mr Sharif and the Saudi royal family,’ he said.

Party sources said there was a view in the PML-N that the PML-N chief would be in a better position if he stayed outside the parliament and called the shots from Raiwind, instead of becoming the leader of opposition in the National Assembly.

If Nawaz Sharif takes part in the election it will be almost a walkover for him because nobody will think of contesting against him, especially for the 123 seat in Lahore.

Sources in the PPP said there was a consensus in the ruling party that Mr Sharif had pinned hopes on mid-term general elections and because of that reason he did not want to become part of the present parliament.

‘The PML-N chief may be thinking that he can call the shots and meet his targets by keeping himself out of the present parliament and prepare grounds for mid-terms polls,’ the PPP sources said.

When asked about reasons for Mr Sharif reluctance to sit in the present National Assembly, Mr Sidiqul Farooq said a federal intelligence agency had hinted that terrorists might target the PML-N leader during electioneering and he had been advised not to take part in the polls.

‘But in case the court directs holding of polls, the party will abide by the court order and Mr Sharif will decide about candidates.’
