ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday reacting strongly to stance taken by PML-N’s former Member of Punjab Assembly from PP-34 Sargodha, Rizwan Gill over possession of fake bachelors degree, upheld a decision of Lahore High Court Election Tribunal and dismissed his appeal.
A three-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikahr Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalil ur Rehman Ramday issued direction to concerned authorities of Election Commission of Pakistan to initiate criminal proceedings under forgery against former MPA.
He submitted a fake affidavit insisting upon authentication of his fake degree, which also bore forged signatures.
The bench imposing a fine on him noted in its order that they had already laid down in its previous orders on similar matters that ECP even Returning Officer should take extra care so that ineligible people should not enter the Parliament.
Earlier, the petitioner did not satisfy bench’s queries regarding his academic qualification.
Chief Justice remarked that he had committed a fraud and these things must end now.
“Many things have happened in the past. People appearing before the Courts make mockery in public without feeling shame on their acts,” he added.
Justice Ramday said that he felt ashamed that such people get into assemblies.
Muhammad Akram Sheikh defended his client and said that these were mere allegations against his client.
On May 28, a Lahore High Court Election Tribunal had disqualified Rizwan Gill for having a fake degree and ordered a case against him and the person who appeared in his place in the BA/BSC examination held under the Punjab University.
Justice Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court also reserved the judgment on the petition of the runner-up candidate Dr Nadia Aziz of PPP who had challenged his educational qualifications.
Dr Nadia Aziz had taken the stance that the Punjab University Controller Office had declared his degree fake.
