Interview of Baba Shamim. Zardari joins Bush, Wen in facing shoe-throwing.

Asif Ali Zardari is the second world leader, after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who has been greeted by shoes instead of cheers and whoops while addressing a gathering in England, making this country an ‘unsafe’ venue for key politicians to express their views in public.

While President Zardari was ‘subjected’ to this treatment on Saturday evening at Birmingham, a student was also arrested in the United Kingdom on February 3, 2009 after he was found guilty of throwing a shoe at the visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during the Communist leader’s speech at Cambridge University.

While the shoe hurled at the Chinese Premier had landed several meters from him, the culpable student was quickly apprehended by security and handed over to police for questioning on suspicion of committing a public order offence.

The man heaving a show at the Chinese Premier had stood up and shouted, “How can you listen to the lies he is telling?”

The incident occurred while Premier Wen, on a three-day visit to the UK to strengthen economic ties, was speaking about China’s role amidst the global economic recession. Along with former US President George Bush Jr, Zardari hence becomes the only second head of the state in the history, who has ducked two shoes thrown at him in quick succession.

On Dec 14, 2008, Bush found two shoes coming his way, while he was addressing a press conference in the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki’s office to mark the signing of a security agreement. Bush also wasn’t hit by the shoes, which had both sailed over his head after they were thrown one after the other. The US president had shrugged and said, “I’m OK” after the incident in Baghdad.

Let me tell you as an American and not a Pakistani, I actually applaud this man for what he has done. NO OTHER President in the world would leave his country if citizens suffer. I feel sorry for Pakistan and that they have a very weak and pathetic president. You all were better economically just few years ago but when this loon came in to your office it’s like all of you were robbed. It took a hit on me as well since I had invested in some businesses in Pakistan with some of my Pakistani friends. The rs kept rising, inflation went up, and it deeply impacted the economy, which in turn really closed down some of our businesses. Right now $1 US dollar is at like 87 RS that is insane. Who elects your leaders the people or criminals? Out of hundreds of Pakistanis I have personally met, most supported Musharraf and literally like 1% supported Zardari. So it just astounds me how he is in office. I mean I certainly do not think the people elected this man. It’s like how George Bush stole the election from Al Gore. This man is the George Bush of your country. What a shame and what a loss for your country. Sorry for everything you all go through. The man who threw the shoes should be your hero.
